The people of Sunabeda plateau here, which has been declared by the Government as a Maoist infested region, will have the luxury of a bus service in next few days.
“The bus will now ply from the district headquarters Nuapada to Cherechuan village located at the foothills of the plateau until the next 20 km of road to Sunabeda is repaired,” said the special officer of the Chakotia Bhunjia Development Agency (CBDA), working for the development of Chakotia Bhunjia tribe of the district.
Sunabeda plateau consisting of two gram panchayats under Komna block is primarily inhabited by people of Chakotia Bhunjia, Gond and Paharia tribes. This area is located in the western part of Odisha bodering Chhatishgarh and is considered a safe haven for various Maoist groups operating in the Andhra-Odisha and Chhatishgarh region.
"It was a great moment for us seeing the bus leaving from Nuapada for our village," said Sunabeda sarpanch Malati Bai Majhi, who was present at Nuapada when the bus was flagged off by Nuapada MLA Rajendra Dholkia in the presence of around 50 people from Sunabeda, Sosend and Michhapali panchayats.
The Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) has funded Rs15 lakh for the purchase of the bus service which will be managed by the CBDA. Although the bus service is seen as an effort by the district
administration to improve the life condition of the people of the remote plateau, it was interesting to note that, except the special officer of CBDA, no other Government official was present during the flagging off function. "We were expecting the District Collector of Nuapada to be present during the flagging off, but she did not come," expressed Rajsing Majhi, a tribal leader.
