In a daring attack, armed Maoists on Saturday shot dead three GRP jawans and injured two others, besides looting five automatic rifles from them in the running Sahebganj-Patna InterCity Express in Bihar’s Munger district. In neighbouring Odisha, two security personnel were killed during an encounter with Maoists in Sunabeda area of Nuapada district.
The Munger incident took place in the running train near a tunnel between Jamalpur and Ashikpur railway stations this evening, Jamalpur’s Railway Superintendent of Police Amitabh Kumar Das said, adding two other GRP jawans sustained bullet injuries.
The Maoists looted five rifles from the GRP jawans before fleeing. The deceased GRP jawans have been identified as Hawaldar Ashok Kumar, constables Bhola Thakur and Uday Singh, Das said adding that the bodies were being sent for post-mortem. The injured GRP jawans are Imtiyaz and Vinay Kumar, the SP said.
The Maoists had attacked the last coach of the train in which the GRP personnel were travelling to loot the sophisticated weapons from them. Besides the five automatic rifles, an unspecified number of cartridges were also looted by the Maoists from the GRP jawans, he said. The five GRP jawans belonged to the Bihar Military Police (BMP)’s 12th unit at Bhagalpur and were escorting the train on way to Danapur, Das said.
The Nuapada encounter took place when the ultras ambushed a team of security personnel in the forest in Datunama under Sunabeda panchayat. The security personnel who were returning to Sunabeda after a routine patrol retaliated with heavy fire forcing the 40-odd Maoists to flee the spot, IG (Operation) Soumendra Priyadarshi said.
The deceased SPO Debendra Dharua belonged to Rajpur village of Boden block while the slain DVF personnel Prakash Rout was from Nuapada town and had recently got married. The SPOs of the district demanded compensation for the families of the deceased. “The compensation should be at par with that provided to jawans and at the same time one of the family members of each deceased should be provided a job,” they said. “We also demand regularisation of our service.”
The Sunabeda sanctuary is located close to the Chhattisgarh border. The Maoists have reportedly created a base in the deep forests for the past several years. The security forces often face problems in their operations as they need to trek seven to eight km to reach the interiors. The latest Maoist attack came less than a week after a large number of tribals of the area held a meeting and decided to help the police and wage war against the Left wing extremists in the region. The Maoists are active in more than half of the State’s 30 districts and Sunabeda is one of their strongholds.
