Dayabati Tandi of Sadhu Pandripani village of Nuapada district had taken an advance of `51,000 in three installments from labour contractor Bhima Sahu of Jenjra village to meet the cost of marriage of her younger son Premlal.
She had pledged to work in a brick kiln in UP  along with the newly married son and other family members after 15 days of the marriage.  However, the contractor came to the house of Dayabati after four days of the marriage on December 16 and asked the family members to go with him.
Premlal was suffering from fever and was not in a condition to move. But the contractor forced them to start the journey.
“We pleaded before the contractor to give us some time, but he did not listen to us,” lamented Dayabati. All of them instantly had to move with the contractor to the nearest railway station at Khariar Road. They were taken to a brick kiln in Jan Bazar of Faizabad in UP.
As Premlal’s fever did not heal in UP, the contractor send for a quack to treat him. However, when the illness aggravated, Premlal was shifted to a Government hospital, where he died on December 30. “We requested the contractor to let us go to our village with the dead body but we were not allowed. The body was burnt there and we were put into the train the next day,” said Dayabati.
When the family arrived in Khariar road, the condition of Premlal’s wife Geetanjali was serious. She was not in a position to talk due to the shock. She was admitted to the district headquarters hospital at Nuapada by her mother-in-law.
The administration was informed about the matter by a local media representative. Soon, it provided `10,000 to Dayabati from the Chief Minister Relief Fund and a work order of a house under the Mo Kudia scheme.
Police said they asked Dayabati to file a FIR against the contractor, but she denied out of fear. Even the attempt of Congress leader Ghasiram Majhi to persuade Dayabati to file a complaint failed to yield any result. Dayabati and Geeta left the hospital the next day and returned home without raising voice against anybody.
Daya and Geeta are afraid of the contractor, so they are averse to filing a FIR. But why is the Labour Officer (LO) of Nuapada not taking any action? However, the SP here assured of investigating the case and taking action against the culprits.
In another case, the police here rescued 42 labourers in the district. When the Khariar police rescued 21 labourers from a private bus which was going to Sambalpur, the Komna police rescued 21 labourers from a Bolero jeep at Komna.  The migrant labourers include nine children and 15 women. Neither the bus nor the Bolero jeep has been seized although the administration had decided a couple of days back in a meeting that the vehicles taking migrant labourers would be seized.
