Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs Secretary Dr Hrushikesh Panda conducted a meeting with the Government officials on his one-day visit here on Monday.
Panda reviewed various development programmes undertaken in the district for the development of tribals, especially in the Maoist affected belt of the district.
“Don’t introduce hybrid crops like paddy and maize in tribal areas like Sunabeda,” instructed Panda to the agriculture officials present in the meeting. He advised the officials to take up programmes which are sustainable in nature and warned against high use of chemical fertilizers like nitrogen in cultivation of maize and hybrid paddy.
Discussing on livestock development programme in the district, Panda told that the officials should be careful while upgrading the species of cattle by artificial insemination. He also reviewed the health situation in Sunabeda area and asked the Health officials to maintain data separately on the Maternal Mortality Rate and Child Mortality Rate (MMR/CMR) of Sunabeda.
Later in a meeting organised by Pragatisila Sramika Mancha for his felicitation, Panda said, “There is no dearth of funds for development works. As such, the people of the district should not migrate to the urban centres. They should work in the village.” Addressing the grievance of the Paharia tribe, he told that the State Government has to send proposal to the Centre again.
“The Centre has decided not to make any new entry,” clarified Panda and advised State ST/ SC development department Principal Secretary Sanjiv Mishra to make necessary correction, so that the matter of exclusion of Paharia from the list after the annexation of their area in Odisha appears clear.
“Instead of keeping the word “Kamar” in the bracket after the title Paharia, there should be a hyphen between Paharia and Kamar,” he said. It is to be noted that, the State TAC has recommended the inclusion of Paharia (Kamar) in the ST list of the constitution where the word Kamar is bracketed after Paharia, which is creating an impression that the Kamars who are black smiths in Odisha are claiming tribal status.
Among others, the meeting was attended by district Collector Jaikumar V and DRDA Project Director Pradip Naik.
