CAMP ON KALACHHIR HELD IN NUAPADA

The Newborn Care Week — 2014 organised by international NGO ‘Save the Children’ in Nuapada district ended with a workshop on awareness campaign on Kalachhir on Friday.
The participants included health workers, elected representatives, NGO personnel and mediapersons of the district.
"Death rate of children in Nuapada district is 53 in 1,000 live births and 39 children out of the number die within 28 days of birth. The objective of observing the Newborn Care Week is to generate awareness among the people about saving the lives of the newborn babies with proper care,” said district programme officer of ‘Save the Children’ Bidyadhar Meher. One of the main causes of newborn death in Nuapada district is the superstitious method of treating Kalachhir, he added.
Kalachhir therapy to treat children is prevalent in Nuapada, Kalahandi and Balangir districts. It literally means black vein. When a black vain on the body of a child looks prominent, the villagers think that it is uncurable by modern medicine. They take the children to a Gunia (village priest) for pressing hot iron marks on various parts of the baby. Most of the children die due to severe pain and burn injury after the uncivilised treatment.
The workshop was also addressed by the CDMO of Nuapada who told that Kalachhir was not a disease. "Neither it is a symptom nor it leads to any disease," he said.
The other participants were State Programme Officer of ‘Save the Children’ Saumya Mishra, the CDPOs of Komna, Khariar and Nuapada blocks, Tapan Ranjan Dash of Door Darshan, Parameswar Barik of Prameya, Hemanta Behera of The Samaj, Mayadhar Saraf of OTV, Ganashyam Bhoi of the Dharitri and Ajit Panda of The Pioneer.
