Buckling under pressure from different quarters, the primary teachers of Nuapada district, who had started agitation on Tuesday demanding revocation of suspension orders on 40 of them, called off their strike on Wednesday and decided to resume the midday meal (MDM) service in schools.
More than 90,000 children in the district were deprived of MDM for a day due to the strike. The district administration had suspended the teachers for three days on charge of enrolling fake children in schools and showing dropouts as regular. Most of the parents resented the decision of the agitating teachers for restraining from providing midday meals to the children. “How can they force the children to stay hungry for creating pressure on the administration to accept the demand of revocation?” asked the aggrieved parents.
In some villages the school management committees (SMC) complained that teachers of their schools persuaded them to give in writing that they (SCM) would not take the responsibility of the MDM.“I did not accept their suggestion and asked them to continue the MDM,” said Motilal Bag, SMC member of the Nehena Primary School, where the MDM was served to children.
“The children would have starved as parents usually stay out of house during harvesting period,” added Bag Commenting on the teachers strike Khariar Bar Association Secretary Chittaranjan Singh Deo said, “It is a clear violation of rights of the children. The Government should take appropriate action against the people who have violated the rights.”
“We draw the attention of the NHRC and the NCPCR through this media report to take appropriate action soon so that no one would dare to resort to such undemocratic strategy in future. If the district administration has erred, then they should also be taken to task,” added Deo.The strategy of using MDM as a weapon to pressurize administration was severely criticised by different sections of people in the district.
