Unable to bear the trauma of crop loss and loan burden, a middle-aged farmer committed suicide by consuming poison at Bhuliasikuan village of Khariar block in Nuapada district on Sunday.
On Saturday evening Santosh Meher (48) had gone out of home and did not return in the night. His body was found on Sunday morning near his thrashing field. He committed suicide by consuming pesticide.
“He was under depression for last few days due to loan burden.
He had borrowed Rs 80,000 from different private sources for cultivation purpose. The tractor which he bought with bank finance was also seized a few days ago due to nonpayment of instalments. Finding no alternative, he ended his life,” said Meher’s family members.
Santosh had 12.5 acre of irrigated land, out of which eight acre was acquired for the Lower Indra Irrigation Project for construction of a canal.
“The compensation paid was too low for our double crop land; thus, livelihood of our family was at a stake," said the deceased’s father Lalit Meher.
Meanwhile, BJP Krushak Morcha under the leadership of its president Sanjay Tiwari and Jadumani Panigrahi visited the family of the deceased and gave Rs 3,000 to perform his last rituals.
Party members also staged a dharna in front of the local police station demanding adequate compensation to Meher’s family. Following this, the district administration provided an assistance of Rs 5,000 to the family. Further, Rs 2,000 was provided under the Harish Chandra Yojana to conduct the last rites of the farmer.
