Farmers of Domjhar Panchayat of Nuapada district have suffered huge losses in paddy crop in the current Kharif season. “We did not get good quality seed; the sale centres cheated us,” complained the farmers.
Basant Behera is one of the farmers of Domjhar village who had cultivated MTU 1001 and Puja varieties of high-yielding paddy in his three acre of irrigated low land. “The seedlings were healthy; the crop growth was very good as well, but there was no fruiting; my hope to get a minimum of 70 quintal of paddy is shattered; every single plant turned gray without yielding a single sprout,” said Basant.
Basant failed to get seed in any of the sale centres in the district; so, he bought it from a sale centre in Bangomunda block of Balangir district. “I thought the problem was solved and never apprehended of such a disaster,” added Basant.
To cultivate the land, Basant has incurred loan amounting to more than Rs40,000, and failure of the crop has left him in a miserable condition.
Many other farmers like Raju Behera, Maniram Lunar, Ludra and Shankar of Domjhar panchayat have the same agony to share. All of them had purchased seeds from Government sale centre at Khaira of Boden block in the district. “Crop grew well, but flower did not come out,” they complained.
Farmers of Palsada village of this panchayat also complained about the quality of seeds, but the seeds they used were from their own stock. “We were forced to use our own seeds as it was not available in the market,” said the farmers. The seeds of the HYV paddy need replacement after three to four years of cultivation, but due to non-availability we are repeating these seeds," they added.
"Seventeen farmers of Domjhar panchayat have reported about crop loss in fifty acre of low land, which are related either to bad quality or outdated seeds," said BJP Krushak Morcha district president Sanjay Tiwari. "The matter would be reported to the Agriculture and Revenue Departments for inquiry," he added.
