More than 20 children below the age of five of Khadang hamlet at Sunabeda village are deprived of the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) as there is no Anganwadi Centre in this remote hamlet located in the Sunabeda plateau of Nuapada district.
Most of the children here are undernourished due to lack of food at their homes. The children belong to the Paharia community, which ekes out their living by weaving bamboo baskets. As this traditional occupation is withering due to non-availability of bamboo on the one hand and problems of an assured market on the other, the community is hard-pressed to get two square meals a day.
The District Press Club of Nuapada has drawn attention of the district administration several times towards the plight of Paharias, but the administration has not taken any initiative to address even their minimum needs. People of the community have settled in about ten small hamlets of fifteen to thirty houses in the Sunabeda-Patdarha forest region of the district. Most of these hamlets don’t have Anganwadi Centre or school.
Members of the CWC (Child Welfare Committee) of Nuapada after a visit to Khadang and Dhatunam hamlets in November 15 had informed the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) about the situation. The DSWO was instructed to give a report about why the nutrition programmes are not running.
“The officials did not even responded to our quarry,” said CWC member Dr Fanindam Deo. The CWC has issued a notice recently to the DSWO to initiate action within seven days, failing which action can be taken under the Juvenile Justice Violation Act.
