NUAPADA VILLAGERS PROTEST LIQUOR SHOPS SHIFTING
Wednesday, 22 March 2017 | AJIT PANDA | NUAPADA | in Bhubaneswar
As the deadline set by the Supreme Court for shifting of foreign liquor shops from the National Highways and State Highway is approaching fast, the vendors in Nuapada district are in a hurry to find alternative sites in nearby villages or suburbs to shift their establishments. However, villagers, especially women, are up in arms against opening of shops in their localities.
The district administration had issued s public notice on March 9 inviting objections from the localities against the proposal for granting exclusive privilege for retail sale of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) for the year 2017-18. Objections are coming from all localities, where shops have been proposed.
Villagers of Dumardihi under the Khariar Road NAC, Sakhatar and Godtar of the Nuapada NAC and women of Santinagar Pada of the Khariar NAC are vehemently opposing shifting of the liquor shops to their respective localities.
About fifty women of Santinagar Pada filed a complaint with the district Collector on Monday at Khariar. Likewise, hundreds of people, particularly women, of the Nuapada and Khariar Road NACs staged a demonstration in front of the Collector’s office at Nuapada on Tuesday objecting grant of permission for opening shops in their localities. “We have never allowed selling of liquor in our villages. Even, the country liquor sellers have been driven out. How can we allow FL shops to run here, asked the villagers.
The complainants of Santinagar Pada have claimed that the proposed site for shifting of the FL shop in their locality is less than 100 metre from the Court of JMFC and the Sub-Judge. Similarly, the Tehasil office, the Watershed office and the office of the DFO are less than a 100 metre from the proposed site. “Furthermore, there is a primary school here,” pointed out women.
People of villages in the Nuapada and Khariar road NACs have also drawn the attention of the Collector to such problems.
