N’PADA MODEL FARMER’S ORCHARD TOTALLY GUTTED

Monday, 03 April 2017 | AJIT PANDA | NUAPADA | in Bhubaneswar

A fruit orchard developed in about five acre of land at village Chanabeda (Barkotipada) of Khariar block in Nuapada district by a progressive farmer, Dinesh Tiwari, was completely destroyed in fire on Saturday when the flames in a nearby field spread to the orchard.

Over 400 plants like mango, lemon, sopeta, cashew, jackfruit and anla were reduced to ashes. Four water pumps and the water distribution systems were also completely gutted. "I am devastated. The loss in term of money would be about Rs 15 lakh, but things that hurt me more are the time, energy and enthusiasm that I put in last five years is lost," lamented Tiwari. "I have also lost my struggle to generate greenery in a barren land," said he.

Tiwari had started the orchard in 2012. He spent three hours daily in the orchard stealing time from his busy schedule as a lawyer. The investment in the first year was about Rs 8 lakh in plants and irrigation system. In addition, he spent about Rs 1 lakh every year on wages, electricity dues, organic manures, pesticides and fertilisers, etc.
"The soil here is very hard, retains less moisture and develops cracks even in rainy season in case of a dry spell for a week in rainy season. You need regular irrigation and organic manures to keep the soil healthy for the plants," said Tiwari, who keenly wanted the matter to be published in media so that attention of the Government could be drawn and provision could be made for covering such crops under insurance schemes. "Government should make provision of insurance for orchard crops to encourage farmers to take such risk," he added.
Tiwari's case is just an example of how farmers of Nuapada district have faced losses for taking up innovations and risks in farming either due to fire accidents or other natural calamities like storm and untimely rain. Jayanti Hati, a migrant labour of Kalimati village (Naagaon GP) of Komna block had suffered a huge loss last month due to gutting of her mango crop.
She with her husband and children were regularly migrating to Andhra Pradesh to work in brick kilns until three years ago. However, getting financial support under the MGNREGS, they planted 160 mango plants in their four acre of land and all the family members were seriously putting their labour in the plantation by irrigating the crop with water of a nearby stream. But unfortunately, the orchard was destroyed completely in few minutes due to fire. "We are now back to our previous fate," said Jayanti, meaning that migration is the only way out for them now.
