N’PADA WIDOW, 3 CHILDREN DON’T KNOW HOW TO LIVE
Sarojini Nag of Danujhola village in Nuapada district has been running from pillar to post to get Widow Pension and Rs 20,000 under the National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) for last six months. She is unable to get the benefit because she has failed to obtain the death certificate of her husband from a hospital located far away from her village.
Sarojini went to Peddapalli near Hyderabad with her husband Jugal and three minor children to work in a brick kiln. Jugal fell sick and could not work. After a lot of persuasion and returning the advance amount to the labour contractor by her relatives in her village, the employer allowed them to leave the workplace.
They started their return journey on December 11, 2016 buying a ticket from Peddapalli to Harishankar Road. But unfortunately, instead of getting into the Odisha-bound train, they boarded another, which went to Nagpur. On the way somewhere at about 1 am Jugal died. “I knew it, but due to fear of police, I did not tell anyone” said Sarojini.
She got down at Nagpur with her children on the following day at about 2 pm and took another train to Raipur. She could not know what happened to Jugal’s dead body after that. It is learnt from reports that the body was taken by the Nagpur railway police for postmortem and later cremated as there was no claimant.
Sarojini is now in need of a death certificate or report from either the police or the hospital where Jugal’s postmortem was done to get Government support under NFBS and for Widow Pension. “How can I go to such a long distance to obtain that,” asks she.
“Without a death report, support under NFBS cannot be provided,” said the BDO of Komna block as well as the Sub-Collector of Nuapada.
Sarojini with her three children lives in a dilapidated room at her Danujhola village. She was getting 25 kg of rice until January last at the rate of 5 kg per person. But when the panchayat officials knew that her husband has died, they immediately deducted 5 kg from her quota.
“The Government did not need a death certificate to deduct the rice quota of her husband but demands that to provide NFBS,” point out villagers.
