Hiramati Jhankar, a tribal girl of Sanbaheli village in Nuapada district, passed Class X examination in first division in 2017, but could not take admission in +2 because her parents could not afford the cost of the studies.
Jaiphula Tandi of Babebir village has also a similar story. She passed in first division, but due to financial problems, could not take higher education. Jaimanee Jhankar, a PVTG girl of Sunabeda village completed her +3 in Botany securing 66 per cent in Khariar Autonomous College, and though she took admission in MSc Botany in Rajendra College at Bolangir, she is unable to go there as hostel seat was not available. "I cannot afford for the accommodation outside," says her father Biju Jhankar.
There are many such girls, mostly tribals and Dalits, in Nuapada district, who want to acquire higher education but have dropped due to financial problems.
Accommodation problem is also the other reason for girls to discontinue their studies. Khariar and Nuapada towns are the education hubs of Nuapada district. Most students prefer the colleges here especially the four decade old Khariar autonomous college located in a sprawling area of about 30 acres at Khariar. But, due to lack of hostel seats, the students face a lot of problems. The women's hostel in this college has 80 seats, but more than 150 girls stay here depending upon the limited infrastructure and facilities like living and reading space, toilets etc.

Jaimanee had approached the district administration of Nuapada for some financial support during her graduation, but she was told that there was no provision for education support. "The Government is telling about "Beti Padhao" but where is the facility," asks Biju, Jaimanee's father. His second daughter Indu had to discontinue her education after +2 as the family wanted Jaimanee to pursue her Masters. However, in spite of such hardships, it is inspiring that the number of girls in colleges is gradually increasing in Nuapada district.
