SAD STORY OF A WIDOW HAVING TWO STEPSONS
Sima Deep lives in a very miserable condition in a one-room kuchha house at the village Ganihari of Nuapada district with two children of her husband’s second wife Sabitri. There is no news about Sabitri since she left home in October last year with a labour contractor to work in a brick kiln. Sima even has no information about the workplace, to which Sabitri was taken.
Sima’s husband Gini, who died four year ago, had married Sabitri as Sima had only one child, a girl. Sabitri gave birth to two boys, Sarat and Ugresan, who are now six and eleven years, respectively. In the absence of an adult male member in the family, Sabitri decided to migrate with the labour contractor. Sima’s daughter is married now. The burden of the two minor children of Sabitri has fallen on Sima.
“Sabitri was not alone when she left home six months ago with the labour contractor Jethu Jagat of Ghagurli village under Belpada PS of Balangir district. There were other women also, but when all others returned home, Sabitri didn’t.” says Sima. “The contractor’s contact number is not working now nor are we able to go to him to ask about Sabitri,” she adds.
Sima is landless. The only way to manage the family is to do wage work. "I have requested the Ward Member, the Sarpanch and block officials for help, but no one is listening," laments she.
