A meeting and a demonstration were held in front of the Khariar block office in Nuapada district on Friday reiterating the demand for a separate Kosal State.
The meeting held by one of the leading proponents of Kosal State, the Kosal Rajya Andolan (KRA), which is spearheading the moment since 2009. “Creation of a new State named Kosal comprising the geographical region included under the Western Odisha Development Council (WODC) is possible under Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution. The Government must initiate action in this regard,” said KRA president Nataraj Mahapatra.
A memorandum addressed to the President of India was submitted to the local BDO. It stated that the demand is genuine in all other respects, geographical, historical and cultural, etc. “In term of area, we have 55,000 square km with a population of more than 10 million, who speak a distinct language of their own having their own script. We are bigger than many north-eastern and north-western States of India. We have a glorious past, which starts from King Baibaswata Manu, 8000 BC. We have rich natural resources, soil, water, dense forests and mineral resources,” stated the memorandum.

The proponents further claimed that as there is no protest of coastal Odisha against the bifurcation, it should be accepted as their silent support for a separate State. “Thus, the Central Government should initiate steps for bifurcation as soon as possible,” stated the movement leaders.
