Truth is stranger than fiction. Looking at the situation of Shamsundar Paharia of Khadang village of Sunabeda plateau, one will realise this.
Shamsundar is laying immobile for last couple of days due to illness.
He is sick for last five months, without having any treatment. “We don't have money for his treatment. I am wondering, how to take care of our children after his death," said his bereaved wife Banbasi, as if she knows that Shamsundar is going to die in a few days.
Khadang is a remote village in Sunabeda plateau of Nuapada district.
The plateau, about 3000 feet above sea level, has been declared as a Maoist infested region. Due to presence of security forces (CRPF), the Maoists are at bay, but health services which remained unavailable during the active presence of the Maoists still remains unreached for the people of about 50 habitations located in two Panchayats of the plateau.
The Pioneer carried a story of Samsundar's family three years back depicting his poverty and food insecurity. Banbasi then had said that they never get curry to eat. The situation does not seem to have changed much since then. They have not got any vegetables to eat for last few weeks except some leaves and roots collected from the forest.
The only succor for them till now is the Rs1 per kg rice. Curry is still a far cry. "There is no employment, no health services, no education, no drinking water, no MDM or Anganwadi food," complained the villagers.
The village has 18 households, with about one hundred people. There are 22 children and five pregnant women. None of the pregnant women have taken immunisation, nor the new born children. Banbasi's eight month old anemic and week child has also not been given any vaccine. The much acclaimed Rubella and Missiles vaccination Programme is yet to reach this village.
There are about 20 children in school going age, but none of them have visited a school as the nearest one at Sanbaheli village is twelve kms far. "All our appeals for basic services have not been heard" rue the villagers.
