SHAMSUNDAR DIES; MANY OTHERS COUNTING DAYS
Tuesday, 13 February 2018 | AJIT PANDA | NUAPADA | in Bhubaneswar
Shamsundar Paharia of Khadang village of the Sunabeda plateau in Nuapada district died of prolonged illness on February 6 without having any treatment.
A Press clipping of the story on his health status published on February 3 had been sent to the district Collector; and a tweet was also made @CMO_Odisha with a hope that the administration might bring succor to Shamsundar. But no action was taken. Shamsundar succumbed to his illness leaving his four children, wife and old deaf mother helpless.
“Who cares; everyone knows that death of a poor man of a remote village would not make any difference to the district administration or the CM because we are voiceless. Several poor people of the Sunabeda plateau have died before due to lack of treatment and the number will continue to rise unattended and unnoticed. It is also uncertain whether Banbasi, the widow of Shamsundar would be covered under the National Benefit Scheme (NFBS). More than twenty widows of Sunabeda and Soseng panchayats are waiting since long to get benefits under the NFBS. Why would the authorities care about Banbasi,” wonders Biju Jhankar of Sanbaheli village.
“The doctor of the Primary Health Centre (PHC) doesn't stay here. How can a poor patient cover 40 long km by walking to reach the Community Health Centre (CHC) in the block headquarters,” asks Biju and drags this correspondent to a house where one of his relatives was lying on a cot. “This is Karansingh Naik, ill since last two months. He sold all his movable assets like goats and cattle and arranged Rs 20,000 for treatment in a Visakhapatnam hospital but did not get well,” says Biju.
Karan belongs to one of the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) of the State. The disease he suffers has made him blind. He has discontinued the drugs prescribed by the hospital being unable to buy those.
“I am waiting to die,” he says. “Will the administration help me? I hope they will if my plight is published in the newspaper,” he says.
