Tribals of Boden block of Nuapada district under the leadership of Congress leaders Bhakta Das and Adhiraj Panigrahi held a demonstration in front of the Boden police station condemning police atrocities on tribals in the name of fighting against Maoists.
They demanded release of the tribals arrested from Kholi Bhitar village of Boden block on Tuesday. They further demanded that Sukal Sai Paharia, who has been missing since April 19, be traced if he has not been detained by police. People of the Paharia community have been claiming that Sukal has been detained by police.
Two tribals, Chatur Chinda and Bidya Chinda, of Kholi Bhitar village were injured on Tuesday due to police firing. Police had taken six tribals of the village into custody after the firing. The police alleged that the tribals were injured when there was an exchange of fire between police and Maoists and the two arrested tribals were militiamen.
The Congress leaders denied all such allegations and said the police are trying to terrorise the people by linking them to Maoists. "The activities of the police are breaking the confidence of people. Why police should resort to such anti-tribal stance, why police are forcing educated tribal youths to act as their informers," asked Bhakta Das.
"It is the Constitutional right of the tribals to enter into forest to cultivate their lands and collect forest produces. Why should they be targeted if the Maoists come across them inside forest," he said, adding that such an attitude of the police would harm the democratic attitude of common mass.
Saubhagya Paharia, wife of missing youth Sukal Paharia, claimed that her husband has been abducted by police. "My husband told me that the SP of Nuapada had summoned him two times to interrogate him about Maoists.
When he denied his involvement, he was beaten by the police during the second summon," informed Saubhagya. "I believe that he has been detained by the police till now," she added. Saubhagya also demanded that the police resister her FIR against the SP of Nuapada on charge of detention of her husband.
The Congress leaders said that if steps are not taken to release Sukal within seven days, the Congress would be forced to spread its movement to all over the district.
"Relation between police and people is rapidly deteriorating in Nuapada district due to the aggressive stance taken by the police since present SP Smith Parmar joined in the district. The Congress will not remain silent on such human rights violation issues," said Adhiraj Panigrahi.

Two tribals of Khaliapada village of Jatgarh panchayat in Komna block had been critically injured by police firing in 2013. A case had been registered in the State Human Rights Commission. The commission had issued an order to the Government to pay compensation. "The situation in our village is the same as the incident of Khaliapada in 2013. The police have to take up the matter seriously" said the villagers.
