Hiradhar Kata has two sons, both married and are having children. They are in occupation of a small piece of Government land inside Khariar town since long.
"It is for more than fifty years that the land is in their possession," said Kata, who lamented that they are yet to getoccupancy right as yet.
Lambodar Banchhor lives in a hut built on the embankment of Gudhel Bandh, a traditional water body. "He will not get the occupancy right here, because it is a common land," said the Revenue staffs.
There are about 200 such households living in small huts inside Khariar town, according to an estimate done by the Khariar NAC. Almost all these households are occupying these lands for decades, but these encroachments have not yet been settled in their names.
They are very poor people leading their lives with petty trades and wage labours etc. "They neither can buy land nor can build house in Khariar town; their only hope is Government," said Chairperson of Khariar NAC Khulana Behera.
"Their role in the development of the town is immense; that's why we have identified them to provide land and house inside the town," she added.
The Khariar NAC has identified about 200 such landless households in five slums to be included in the land allotment scheme. The Chairperson along with the Councilors and the Executive Officer of the NAC are therefore enthusiastic.
"It was long overdue and hence, we are happy," the Councilors said, who are going to face the ULB election in near future."
An aerial survey for identification of houses has been started since Saturday last by the TATA Trust. It will corroborate with physical survey in the field," said the Executive Officer, Khariar NAC.

The areas where the settlements are to be built are Brahmanapada, Cchhutigudipada, Talpada, Niljibandhpada and Hatapada. Persons whose income per annum is less than Rs1.80 lakh would get the benefit. Land once allotted is not transferable. Vision NGO has been employed for the survey of households, said sources.
