Hoodwinked by some unscrupulous contractors and brokers, several beneficiaries of the Awas Yojana in Buergaon and Bhainsadani GPs of Boden block in Nuapada district have given up their hope of completing their houses.
Dambru Majhi, a poor old and disabled man of Nimna village in Buergaon panchayat living with his wife in a small temporary, has been waiting for the contractor to arrive.
"One Subrat Majhi, a staff of the SBI Boden branch, came to us and informed that the first instalment has been deposited in our bank account.
When he volunteered to construct our house, we agreed and gave our signatures in the withdrawal forms.
He took all the money from my account but didn't start work. If we don't construct the plinths, the second instalment will not be released," said Dambru.
Basanti Majhi, a widow of Dhamnapada village under the same panchayat, also has a similar complaint. Subrat Majhi has left her construction at the lintel level. "I don't know how much he took from my account; the passbook is with him," said Basanti.
There are many such cases in Buergaon, Bhainsadani and Sunapur panchayats. The beneficiaries of Sunapur revealed that the brother of a woman Junior Engineer of Boden block is the contractor. Budhuram Paharia, Saubhagya Paharia and many other beneficiaries of Bhainsadani GP have also been let down by the contractors, who have taken the money and left the houses incomplete.
The beneficiaries revealed that they have repeatedly drawn attention of the higher authorities, but no one has come to their rescue.
