The longstanding demand of people of Khariar for establishment of a Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre (NRC) was fulfilled with the inauguration of a 10-bed NRC at Khariar on Friday.
The NRCs are meant for restoring severely acutely malnourished (SAM) children to good health while educating their mothers about nutrition and childcare. The scheme has been lunched under a collaborative scheme of the Unicef and the Government.
The Khariar NRC is the second one in Nuapada district after the first one was established a few years ago in the district headquarters. Collector Dr Poma Tudu inaugurated the centre in the presence of hundreds of women, panchayat representatives and Government officials including CDMO Shankar Prashad Meher, Khariar PHC gynaecologist Dr Dinabandhu Mahanand, Manager of NGO World Vision NGO Sukanta Nag, DPM Biswambar Behera and PHEO Dharmendra Tandi.
A public meeting was held after the inauguration where the officials spoke about the provisions and facilities to be available in the NRC. "The Khariar NRC has the scope to serve malnourished children of this area. Parents, who hesitated to go to the NRC at Nuapada due to long distance, would be psychologically prepared to bring their children to this centre," said the Collector.
Dr Meher informed that the NRC is equipped with three staff nurses supported by three attendants. A child can stay here even for a month or more till she or he recovers from her malnourishment. A paediatrician would visit the centre regularly for health checkup. Food would be provided to the children and their mothers during their stay. There is also a provision for compensating the wage loss for the mother at a rate of Rs 100 per day till the last day of her stay. She would also get a transport cost of Rs 100 at the time of leaving the NRC.
The manager of the World Vision, which has provided the beds to the NRC, also assured that the NGO would provide a food package worth Rs 1,000 to the mother while returning to her home. The NGO also assured to establish a few more centres in near future considering the need of the area.
"It is our motto to improve the child health in the district and to improve the ranking of the district to the top in nutrition," said the representative of World Vision.

Khariar PS Chairman Balkrishna Sabar was guest of honour on the occasion.
