N'pada farmers cheated by insurance firms

Thousands of farmers of Nuapada district who had deposited their hard-earned money as premium to insure their crops in 2017 and were waiting to be compensated for the heavy crop loss of that year now feel cheated as some of the panchayats have totally been left uncovered under the much touted scheme of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
“The National Agricultural Insurance Company and the concerned Government departments are to be blamed for this exclusion,” the farmers said.
Nine gram panchayats of the district which have suffered the drought most have totally been deprived of the coverage. The Panchayats are Bargaon of Khariar block, Nilji, Snapali, Godal,
Kenduguda and Ranimunda of Sinapali block, Nuagaon of Komna block and Amanara and Darlimunda of Nuapada block.
“This is a conspiracy cooked up by the district administration, the State Government and the insurance company to cheat the people,” alleged the deprived farmers. But, it is quite astonishing that, none of the district level officials including the Collector is revealing the causes of such indiscriminate exclusion of the farmers of the nine gram panchayats.
Even the political parties and all concerned are clueless about the reason of exclusion. “We have demanded information from the district authority on crop cutting estimates and report on crop loss submitted to the Government and the insurance company through RTI, but the district authority is not turning up,” told BJP Krushak Morcha president Sanjay Tiwari.
“It is quite amazing, how the farmers of irrigated belt got insurance and the non-irrigated belt remained excluded,” asked he. The BJP held a 7-hour strike on Saturday all over the district to protest the exclusion. Memorandums addressed to the Governor of Odisha were submitted. Plying of vehicles was stopped from 7 am to 1 pm and the shutters of the shops were downed and Government offices were closed in protest.
