Farmers of Khariar block led by the BJP held a rally at Khariar and gheraoed the block officer on Monday demanding crop insurance, ration card and input subsidy, etc. The rally started from the Samaleswari temple and ended at the block office where the demonstration and a public meeting were held.
The leaders alleged that the farmers of Nuapada district are facing discrimination in the BJD regime. “The Naveen Patnaik Government has failed in every front; farmers have not yet been paid the insurance against crop failure of 2017-18; thousands of poor households have been deprived of getting ration cards; poor are migrating to distant places under distress condition due to lack of employment; NREGS has failed to address the problem of migration due to delay in wage payment; and, moreover, the delay in completion of the Lower Indra Irrigation Project has added to the woes of local farmers,” said the leaders.
The rally was led by BJP Krushak Morcha district president Sanjay Tiwari. Thousands of people of different villages, especially women farmers, of Khariar block participated in the rally. Farmers of Areda gram panchayat complained about nonpayment of their insurance money by the Khariar branch of Bank of India. Beneficiaries of Government housing schemes also complained that the banks are not allowing them to withdraw the required amounts.
“The block transfers funds to our bank accounts according to the PMAY rule, but the banks do not allow us to withdraw the whole amount when we need total transferred amount to pay wages and make payment to the traders for materials,” rued the beneficiaries.
BJP district president Sibaprashad Mund and vice-president Pruthiraj Mahanti, Ajit Chalan, Belu Mahapatra and other party leaders were present.
