Nuapada farmers hold demo before DM

Hundreds of farmers of Nuapada district demonstrated at the office
the Collector, Nuapada, on Tuesday, protesting the apathy of the
district administration in procurement of paddy in the Rabi season.
When the farmers are waiting with their paddy in different Mandis of the district, the millers have declared that the procurement target has already been achieved. The district had fixed a procurement target of total 3. 20 lakh quintals for the current Rabi season. But much before the last day of procurement i.e. June 30, the millers declared the targets to have been met, where as the farmers still have thousands of quintals of unsold paddy with them, alleged the agitators."The millers have procured paddy of Chhatishgarh at a cheaper price to fill their respective targets and by that way have made huge profits. The Civil Supply Officer and the ARCS, Nuapada, and the district Collector are hands in glove with the millers,” said BJP leader Prasanna Padhi.
It is learnt that a total of 3,000 farmers had done online registration for selling their surplus paddy during Rabi season, but at least 1,000 of them are fake, who had not cultivated paddy in the Rabi season, but have been shown as the sellers in procurement registers.
"It happens every year and the millers monitor it in a planned manner to adjust the paddy which they procure from non-farmers/petty traders in an illegal way," added Padhi.
"The district administration is not accepting the fact even after several rounds of discussion; where shall the farmers go to sell their paddy; why the administration is showing such favour to the millers," asked Congress leader Rabi Mangaraj.
Meanwhile, the farmers have decided that they would dump their paddy in front of the Collector's office if not procured in next two days, said sources.
