The farmers of Khasbahal and Dohelpada Panchayats of Nuapada district, under the banner of Khasbahal-Dohelpada Krushak Sangathan, blocked the Khariar-Bhawanipatna road on Friday from 6 am to 2 pm, protesting against denial of crop insurance money and delay in payment of input subsidy for loss of Kharif crop last year.
"Thousands of farmers of our Panchayats had deposited premium to insure their crops in 2018. The crops failed miserably, but the insurance company has not paid the compensation," rued the farmers. "The Government is in agreement with the insurance company to cheat the farmers; that is why, the loss has been shown very minimal," they said.
Blaming the Government, the agitators further stated that the farmers have incurred total loss last year in agriculture due to irregularities in the rainfall, but the Government has not submitted the actual report to the insurance company. "We had met the concerned Government officials, including the district Collector, to inquire about our dues from the insurance company and subsidy payment, but they are in a denial mode. We are thus forced to agitate," the farmers added.
The Khariar Tehsildar, Additional Tehsildar, BDO and DEO along with police personnel rushed to the spot to pacify the farmers and persuade them to lift the road blockade. The farmers agreed to end their agitation after they were informed that the input subsidy would be paid within a week. The Tehsildar after receiving the memorandum from the farmers assured that she would forward that to the higher authorities for necessary action.
