Dusila Bag of Amguda village under Boden block of Nuapada district has been desperately running to the concerned labour broker since last two weeks to enquire about her husband Rahasa.
Her family members allege that one Kumuda Bag of Bodlapada, who operates as a local labour dalal for a labour contractor called Rehman had forcibly taken Rahasa on December 4 when Rahasa was returning home from a threshing field.
"We heard from villagers about him being forcibly taken by Kumuda in a jeep," said Dusila, who has difficulty in hearing. "Kumuda later confirmed that he has sent Rahasa to Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh to work in a construction site," added Rahasa's father Charansing. Rahasa had taken a loan of Rs 5,000 from Kumuda during the Nuakhai festival. Family members guess that Kumuda might have forced him to go to Vijayawada as he could not repay the amount in time. Kailash, Rahasa's uncle, got a phone call from an unknown number on December 6. "The caller, without introducing him, wanted me to hand over the phone to my nephew, who informed me with a trembling voice that Rahasa was in Vijayawada and has been mercilessly beaten, for which his lower limbs are nearly paralysed. The phone was disconnected and there is no further contact after that," said Kailash.
The family members asked Kumuda to provide whereabouts of Rahasa. Kumuda called back to an unknown caller, who asked Kumuda to contact the Mangalagiri police station. Rahasa's father Charansing and another person rushed to the police station, 30 km from Vijayawada, where the police informed that no one in such name had reported in the PS. Returning from Vijayawada, Charansing has lodged a case in the Boden PS alleging kidnap of his son by Labour dalal Kumuda Bag. The FIR is yet to be registered.
Notably, paying advance money is a regular strategy to lure this region’s labourers to migrate.
The desperation of labour contractors now, however, has increased as workers are not coming out openly to migrate fearing Covid-19 restrictions, thus using force to send labourers, who have taken advance, to work sites," says BJP leader Hitesh Bagartti. "The administration should remain alert to curb such distress migration," adds he.
Dusila is now helpless in the absence of her husband. Her elder daughter Madhu is deaf and dumb; younger one also has physical disability. "We have obtained disability certificates, but there is no pension yet," she informs.
