Demand for K’banji-Koksara rly line gains momentum

The demand for a railway line from Kantabanji to Koksara is gaining momentum as people as well as elected representatives from Dharamgarh block of Kalahandi district and Bangomunda and Kantabanji blocks of Balangir district have joined hands with those of Khariar block in Nuapada district to echo their voices in support of the demand.

Various groups and individuals in these blocks submitted memorandums to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during his recent visit to Kalahandi and Balangir."It is a good suggestion to link Kantabanji to Nabarangapur via Khariar and Koksara paving a railway line through an unreached area meaning an opening for development of the people," said Jagdish Suna of Bangomunda who submitted a memorandum to the Minister in Haldi village in the presence of Kalahandi BJP MP Basanta Panda. Khariar Congress MLA Adhiraj Panigrahi also submitted memorandum to the Minister demanding this line while journeying with him in a train from Kantabanji.

"We got an opportunity to discuss with the Minister about this railway line," said Panigrahi. However, he resented that the Minister was not suggested by the concerned authorities for visiting Khariar.

"The Minister’s route chart could have been through Khariar, which could have provided an opportunity to Khariar people for interaction," added he.Tapan Dash, secretary of the Khadial Bikash Manch, a forum demanding a Kantabanji-Koksara railway line since 2010, reiterated the demand by submitting a memorandum to the Minister at Bangomunda. "As per our earlier demand for this railway line, the Ministry had allocated fund for a survey in the financial year 2012-13. The survey was completed, but the Rate of Return (ROR) was shown negative.

Now, the Ambaguda-Nabarangapur line will pass through Koksara. Thus, we have proposed for a KBJ-Koksara line, which will reduce the distance by 40 km in the hilly terrain," said Dash.

The proposed line would touch Dharamgarh of Kalahandi district, which has created interest amongst the people of that area. They have also submitted a memorandum to the Minister. The demand for this line has also come from Kantabanji. Both the former and present MLAs of Kantabanji, Ayub Khan and Santosh Singh Saluja, also submitted memorandums to the Minister.

"The lead of 37,000 votes in the Khariar Assembly constituency in last parliament election by the present Kalahandi BJP MP was possible only because the voters wanted him to fulfil their dream of this railway line," said Saluja while submitting the memorandum to the Minister.

"Considering such a wider acceptability of the proposal, it is hoped that the demand for our railway project would be acknowledged by the Ministry," said Chitta Ranjan Singh Deo, a member of Khadial Bikash Manch.
