Ramgarh not yet tagged as archaeological site
The Ramgarh Bikash Samiti, an organisation of local people of Gandabaheli panchayat dedicated for development of the Ramgarh archaeological site of Nuapada district, held a meeting on Saturday to discuss about development of the site as a tourist place. Jitamitra Prasad Singh Deo, Raja of Khariar, who is famous for his research work in archaeology, was chief speaker on the occasion. The meeting was attended by hundreds of people of five villages of the panchayat who wanted to know about the significance of Ramgarh.
Singh Deo said that the place has remains of the megalithic period. "Megalithic culture is alive till now. Tribals cremate their deceased and put a stone over that.
This is the culture that the tribal people are following for millions of years," said Singh Deo to make people understand about the stone structures present at Ramgarh. He cited several examples of the megalithic period remains seen in undivided Kalahandi district and said the culture of this area is millions of years old. "This region has witnessed both Saiva and Baishnav Tatwas in the past and several traces of Sakti Upasana is also found here," he said. "However, it is distressing that the Government is not taking interest in developing these areas as tourist places.
A tourism map has been prepared by the Odisha Government, but Ramgarh is not found in it," he rued and thanked those who organised the discussion about Ramgarh. "People who have interest in megalithic culture will only find interest in this place, but it will not lead to development of the area as a tourist spot. You have to work hard to develop it. I have been appointed as the guide of the newly-established Kalahandi University in its anthropology and archaeology departments. I will certainly tell (the authorities) about the archaeological aspects of these two districts." added Singh Deo, who has written several books on archaeological findings of undivided Kalahandi district.
