Dolamani Majhi (25) of Malbhata Pada hamlet of Nagpada GP in Boden block has already spent about Rs 5 lakh for her treatment in one and a half years, but she is still to get cured. "I suffered only due to negligence of the doctor who operated me for family planning," says she.

"We decided to go for the operation because we had four children. The operation was done in a camp held at the Boden Community Health Centre (CHC), 20 km from our village," says Miniketan, Dolamani's husband. Dolamania had gone to the CHC with her husband by a bicycle and also returned by the bicycle after the operation. "The problem started the next day. My belly started swelling and I continuously vomited. I was crumbling with severe abdominal pain. When we visited the same doctor in the CHC after two days, he conducted ultrasound and said it was acid problem. He took Rs 800 for that. He advised us to take acid medicines," says Dola.

What followed thereafter was a long suffering and struggle of Dolamani for survival. According to her, she is struggling for life only because of the carelessness of the doctor who cut the small intestine during the tubectomy procedure.

Miniketan took Dolamani to the medical college hospital at Burla (VIMSAR) on the advice of doctors of the Nuapada District Headquarters Hospital. "The doctors in Burla revealed that the intestine has been wrongly cut.

They operated the belly and fixed plastic bag for collection of fecal matter. What I learnt from the discussions amongst the performing doctors that my stomach was full of rotten things. It was even difficult for the doctors to bear the foul smell during the operation," says Dolamani.

The medical reports of the VIMSAR reveal that corrective surgical procedure has been done. Dolamani stayed in the hospital for about a month and was relieved when lockdown was announced. "They had told me to report after a month for removal of the bag.

We reported accordingly, but they didn't admit me. We have gone there five times subsequently, but they returned me citing the Covid situation. Finally, I had to be admitted at the Khariar Mission hospital when my condition deteriorated and I stayed there till my condition improved.

We spent there about Rs 80,000," adds. The couple says they have spent about Rs 5 lakh in total for buying medicines, colostomy bags, to meet cost of travel to Burla and towards the cost of treatment in the Mission hospital.

Dola has not received any financial support from the Government for treatment. "We have taken loan from moneylenders and are paying interest for that. I find them standing on my doorstep every alternate day for recovery. It is difficult to live such a life" said Miniketan.

Dolamani is still unable to do physical work. The only source of living for the family is their three acres of agriculture land. Miniketan and his mother toil hard to make ends meet. "I am still unable to help them in farming, only extending a helping hand to my mother-in-law in household chores," says Dola. She further informs that last year's yield from land was sold to meet the cost of treatment in the Mission hospital. "The only succour is the PDS rice," she adds.

Dolamani and Miniketan feel that it was a case of medical negligence and they should be compensated for the expenses they have incurred. Miniketan, meanwhile, has filed an FIR at the Boden police station alleging negligence by doctors and demanding action against them.

A case in the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also been filed by one Dilip Dash of Bhawanipatna. The NHRC has directed the State Health Secretary and the Nuapada district Collector to submit a report on the case.

The next hearing is on August 31. In the meantime, as reported by Dolamani, some health officials of the Boden CHC and the District Headquarters Hospital have taken all medical reports of VIMSAR as well as of the Mission hospital a week ago from them.
