Tribals gherao Khariar PS, protest cops’ inaction
Hundreds of Adivasis under the banner of Zilla Adivasi Kalyan Sangha, Nuapada gheraoed the Khariar police station on Saturday expressing discontent over police inaction to provide justice to tribals. "Adivasis are discriminated against in the district.
Atrocity cases filed in different PSs are not being investigated properly. Police take the side of the rich and powerful," tribal leaders alleged, The tribals came to the PS in a rally from the Samaleswari temple and held a meeting in front of the PS. Western Odisha Adivasi Kalyan Sangha president Niranjan Bishi, Balakrishnan Sabar, Somnath Khamari, Bhanuprakash Singh Majhi, Homsingh Majhi and other leaders spoke in the meeting.
Notably, in a meeting held last week at Bargaon village of Khariar block, tribal people had raised questions over police inaction and warned that they would gherao the Khariar PS.
They had questioned why police did not act on an FIR lodged by Dhananjay Sabar, a lineman of electricity department who was beaten up by some upper caste youths at Thikpali village under the Komna PS.They had also resented over police inaction in a case filed by a displaced person of the Lower Indra Irrigation Project claiming that the officials of R&R unit in connivance with a swindler have misappropriated the assistance sanctioned to him. They also alleged that an FIR lodged by one Chandra Sekhar Sabar of Goimundi village, who is an IIC in police department, has also not been taken seriously.
