Abil bindhani, 57, has been living in a dilapidated house with his family in Padmapur village of Khariar block since many years. "I can't get a house under PMAY as I am not the owner of that land where I stay," says Abil, who does not know whether his ancestors ever held any land or not. "As far as I know, my grandfather was landless; my father was landless; and I am also landless. My son is a daily wager and I think he would also remain landless," says he.

Abil was migrating to different brick kilns to earn livelihood till the outbreak of corona. "My leg was fractured last year in an accident; now, I am unable to do hard work; so, our family is managed by my wife and son," he adds.

Hemani Tandi and Chandra Kanti Sabar of Putupada (Ward-11) are also landless; they have settled in a piece of Government land. "We are warned regularly by the revenue officials to leave that plot, but where shall we go," they ask.

Abil, Hemani and hundreds of people like them of Putupada, Padmapur, Junani and many other villages led by the Communist Party of India staged a demonstration in front of the Khariar Tehasil office on Thursday demanding land. Most of them are wage workers; they don't have homestead plot. According to them, the number of landless households without even having homestead plots in Ward-6 of Padampur village would be around 70, in Muktapur (Ward-8) of Khariar NAC, the number is 25 and in Putupada there are 27 homestead-less persons.

The demonstrators under the leadership of CPI general secretary Ashish Kanungo handed over a demand letter to the Additional Tehsildar addressed to the Chief Minister. Gopal Bhoi of Balangir district, Banshidhar Pradhani, president of Nuapada district unit, Sanjay Sunani, Kalahandi, Sarojini Pradhani, Pandabha Bhoi, Kamal Bhoi were present. The 13-point demands included allotment of forestland under FRA, inclusion of left-out deserving households under NFSA, waiving electricity bills of up to 200 units, waiving of agricultural loans, providing farmers with 200 days’ work, etc
